know us
Hey there, I’m Captain Richard, and Folly Beach has been my home water for nearly 2 decades.
I first arrived here by sailboat in 2007, dropping anchor after months of exploring the eastern seaboard from the Canadian border to the tropics. Something about the wonderful people on Folly drew me in and I made it my home base. When I wasn’t shipping out with the merchant marines I spent every spare hour exploring creeks, sandbars and hidden channels that most visitors (and even some locals) never see.
All that wandering turned into a calling. Today I’m a USCG-licensed Master Captain who gets to do what I used to do for fun-only now I share the ride. Expect strories from blue-water voyages (like that time I got caught offshore in a hurricane!), insider tips on Folly’s best swim spots, and an easygoing vibe that matches the island itself.
Because this place is just as much about wildlife as it is about waves, I earned my Coastal Master Naturalist certification in 2023. On board you’ll hear why the dolphins are rolling around out of the water on the beach (spoiler: strand feeding), why the oysters keep our waters so healthy and which birds are flying overhead (was that an American White Pelican?!!).
My favorite moment of the cruise is watching peoples faces light up when a dolphin surfaces just a few feet away. If that sounds like your kind of afternoon-or sunset-climb aboard. I can’t wait to show you the Folly I fell in love with from the deck of my own boat all those years ago.
